We emailed Tees Valley mayor, Ben Houchen, this afternoon following the news the GE has put plans on hold for its factory on Teesside. He did not respond.
This evening, however, a comment has appeared on his Facebook page in which he (or one of his staff) has described this news as ‘Labour Party propaganda’:
The comment is contained in an article entitled ‘145 New EV Charging Points’ which is accompanied by a picture that appears to show Houchen putting petrol into an electric car. You can’t miss it.
When this report was posted on the 'Redcar Alert' FB page, Redcar MP, Jacob Young, responded as follows:
Were this propaganda, we would not have written to the mayor in advance of publication asking for comment on the reports we had received. If this is no more than rumour, then he had the opportunity to say so before we published our report. So, the Monitor as treated this report entirely appropriately.
Also, we can’t help but notice that Ben Houchen and Jacob Young don’t appear to be in contact with each other at the moment. Is the Monitor the Labour Party, as Houchen asserts? If so, why does Jacob Young think that this is ‘a small group of people’?
At present, Tees Valley Monitor is confident that the information it has received is robust. Otherwise, we would not have printed it. We expect that Houchen and Young may have more to say about this in the coming days. We look forward to it.
